MAKING LIFE MORE COMFORTABLE
DURING THE FIGHT AGAINST BREAST CANCER
Founded in January 2019, Booby Cushions is a non-profit social enterprise that supports women who have recently undergone a mastectomy. Started by Susan Rivett as a home-based business, after being inspired to help others following her own journey with breast cancer, it has now grown with the support of her sponsors, Department of Corrections and James Dunlop Textiles.
Booby Cushions provides both physical and emotional support. A practical gift that is pretty, fun, helpful and symbolises love at a frightening time.
Susan Rivett
Susan Rivett is an interior design professional, that worked in London for 25+ years in the high-end residential interior design market.
She moved to New Zealand with her kiwi husband of 22 years and teenage children, Nancy & Ted, looking for a quieter and better quality of life, arriving in Auckland on 1st April 2016.
Her plans took a bit of a setback when less than 18 months later she found a lump on her left breast and was quickly diagnosed with breast cancer.
A huge thank you to People and Companies Involved
The cushions are solely manufactured by the ladies in the sewing room at the Corrections Unit in South Auckland
Website and Digital Support is sponsored by Weblizard Digital Marketing Agency, that works with local businesses throughout New Zealand.
How The Cushions Are Made
We obtain fabric from NZ based textile company, James Dunlop Textiles in kind and the cushions are solely manufactured by the ladies in the sewing room at the Corrections Unit in South Auckland.
It’s a wonderful story seeing women support other women thru a traumatic time in their lives.
Breast cancer touches many of our lives including prisoners and prison officers who themselves know someone or have themselves fought breast cancer and want to help.
Get Your Cushion or Gift It
The cushions are designed and made to fit perfectly under the arm to ease the discomfort for those that undergo the mastectomy surgery.
They can be used in bed to ensure ladies sleep well throughout their recovery, used in the car to protect the affected chest area from seatbelt irritation, or used when out and about to avoid being hurt from people’s elbows and bags.
The use of the cushion can also be extended to help after radiotherapy treatment when skin around the area where the breast has been removed and under the arm can be very tender. Clients continue to use their cushions long after their surgery to help with sleep.
